GrabCAD – Glad to meet you.

I heard some mentions of GrabCAD on Twitter and didn’t think much of it at the time. Now that I finally found some time to Google it, I’m wondering why didn’t I look sooner. This site is along the lines of what I’ve been looking for. I think it’s a good direction to take as far as pooling CAD libraries from the users.

The site is a good start, with a clean interface and good community centric aspects. Anybody can post completed models or make requests to the community for one’s they need. The main focus still seems to lean towards bringing traffic to the site to sell their paid CAD services, but you have to give them credit for offering this free service to the CAD community.

Only time will tell if the site is adopted by the masses. If they continue to improve and add functionality it stands a chance. With a user population of 1357, it’s a pretty good size for a fairly new CAD community website.

I’m going to contact them and see if I can get some additional information to share with you all.

From the about page:

The founders of GrabCAD, Hardi Meybaum and Indrek Narusk previously ran a product development company, where they realized how much of engineers’ time is wasted on simple, repetitive and often unnecessary tasks and how their work processes could be optimized by developing a unified CAD services marketplace, cross-platform CAD library and engineering community. This led them to start GrabCAD in 2009. The company is based in Tallinn, Estonia.

  1. Hello Thomas,

Thanks for this post about GrabCAD, it’s pretty much as you write – the focus is on free “open source” (if borrowing from the open source software movement is an adequate comparison) CAD library and community for the engineers and to support that we do also sell CAD services. Or to be more precise – we’re actually building a marketplace for CAD services so anyone who signs up with us could also start getting some extra freelance work via us.

Get in touch for more behind-the-scenes info. I’m responsible for the website, it’s features and functionality.

    Cheers, Siim Teller from GrabCAD
